Dolphins (Year 4) 2018 - 2019

Welcome to Term 5 in Dolphins Class! We have a new theme this term - Shakespeare and the Tudor times! I'm really looking forward to this, it should be a good one!

Please can you ensure your child has their PE kit in school at all times so that they can participate in all PE sessions (Monday and Tuesday afternoons)! We may also change the times or have other opportunuties arise where the children need to wear their PE kits so it is very important that they are in school all the time. We will also be starting the Mile-a-Day run again and children will need their trainers and a spare pair of socks for this activity.

Thank you!

Homework will be given out on a Friday and due back on the date on the sheet. It will usually consist of a number of tasks or projects that the children need to complete.  They can do this in any creative or imaginative way they want to! In the past, we have had photos, models, pull out flaps and games!  There might also be tasks where you are encouraged to read and discuss topics with your children.

For the next two terms (5 and 6), the children have been given a variety of activities about Shakespeare and the Tudors that they are expected to complete for their homework. The expectation is for the children to complete at least 1 activity per week (if they do more than one - fantastic!) Homework should be brought in on Friday 25th May to be checked and we will have a celebration of all the learning the children have completed at home at the end of Term 6. If you need another copy of the homework, please check the documents section.

Thank you so much for all the homework returned so far - it looks fantastic!

Holiday Homework

Have a look in the Documents section to find our '50 Things to Do' homework. Two or three items from this checklist should be completed in each holiday and recorded in some way so that the children can bring them in and share their experiences. This could be recorded in their homework book or using photographs, powerpoints etc.

Remember to stay safe when researching online!

Times Tables

It is important for the children to learn their times tables off by heart and this can easily be practised at home at least 3 times a week, alongside their regular reading. By the end of Year 4, the expectation is that the children know their times tables up to 12x12. Here is an excellent website designed to help the children learn their times tables in a fun and engaging way, through games and activities.

Times Tables - learn a new times table in 5 days!

Enjoy and have fun!

Reading and Spelling

Children are expected to read to an adult at home at least 3 times per week and their reading record should be signed. We have also introduced a spelling book and we would like the children to practise their spellings at home at least 3 times per week too. The spelling book is also used daily at school so needs to come into school each day. There are a number of spelling activities the children have learnt to practise (an example of some of these is below) - see if they can teach you how to do some!

Spelling Activities:

  • Pyramid Writing
  • Three Times
  • Bubble Words
  • Blue Vowels
  • Fancy Letters
