Sand Dollars (Year 4/5) 2019 - 2020

Welcome to Term 1 in Sand Dollars Class!

The children are already well immersed into our Ancient Egyptians Theme.

PE

Please can you ensure your child has their PE kit in school at all times so that they can participate in all PE sessions on a Monday and Wednesday. We may also change the times or have other opportunuties arise where the children need to wear their PE kits so it is very important that they are in school all the time. We will also be continuing the Physical 15. Children will need their trainers and a spare pair of socks for this activity only if you feel they need them and they will be able to change back into their school shoes after the Physical 15.

Homework
Homework will be given out on a Friday and due back on the date on the sheet. It will usually consist of a number of tasks or projects that the children need to complete.  They can do this in any creative or imaginative way they want to! In the past, we have had photos, models, pull out flaps and games!  There might also be tasks where you are encouraged to read and discuss topics with your children. We will also be completing a small artefact project to go in our Egyptian museum based on their own learning.

Remember to stay safe when researching online!

Times Tables

It is important for the children to learn their times tables off by heart and this can easily be practised at home at least 3 times a week, alongside their regular reading. By the end of Year 4, the expectation is that the children know their times tables up to 12x12. Here is an excellent website designed to help the children learn their times tables in a fun and engaging way, through games and activities.

Times Tables - learn a new times table in 5 days!

Enjoy and have fun!

Reading and Spelling

Children are expected to read to an adult at home at least 3 times per week and their reading record should be signed. Books will only be changed following discussion with an adult. Children are encouraged to challenge themselves with their reading and become more aware of the types of book they like to read. We have also introduced a spelling book and we would like the children to practise their spellings at home at least 3 times per week too. The spelling book is also used daily at school so needs to come into school each day.

We will be taking a trio to Maidstone Museum as part of our theme learning. more news to follow shortly.

Many Thanks!
