Sand Dollars (Year 4/5) 2019 - 2020

Welcome to Term 6 in Dolphins Class! The children are carrying on with their topic this term - The Shang Dynasty!

Please can you ensure your child has their PE kit in school at all times so that they can participate in all PE sessions (Wednesdays and Thursdays)! We may also change the times or have other opportunuties arise where the children need to wear their PE kits so it is very important that they are in school all the time. We will also be continuing the Physical 15. Children will need their trainers and a spare pair of socks for this activity only if you feel they need them and they will be able to change back into their school shoes after the Physical 15.

It is also the long awaited return of swimming this term for the Year 4 pupils! Please see the letter that was sent out to make sure your child has appropriate swimwear. We will be leaving by coach just after lunch on a Thursday and will be back at school by hometime.

Thank you!

Homework will be given out on a Friday and due back on the date on the sheet. It will usually consist of a number of tasks or projects that the children need to complete.  They can do this in any creative or imaginative way they want to! In the past, we have had photos, models, pull out flaps and games!  There might also be tasks where you are encouraged to read and discuss topics with your children.

Remember to stay safe when researching online!

Maths Homework

Here is the link to the Maths of the Day homework website. Each week, I will be setting the children tasks to complete for their maths homework. There is a guide to maths homework in the documents section and an online video to show you how to use this website to find the homework tasks. Each new task will be set on a Monday to be completed throughout that week. Have fun!

Times Tables

It is important for the children to learn their times tables off by heart and this can easily be practised at home at least 3 times a week, alongside their regular reading. By the end of Year 4, the expectation is that the children know their times tables up to 12x12. Here is an excellent website designed to help the children learn their times tables in a fun and engaging way, through games and activities.

Times Tables - learn a new times table in 5 days!

Enjoy and have fun!

Reading and Spelling

Children are expected to read to an adult at home at least 3 times per week and their reading record should be signed. We have also introduced a spelling book and we would like the children to practise their spellings at home at least 3 times per week too. The spelling book is also used daily at school so needs to come into school each day. There are a number of spelling activities the children have learnt to practise (an example of some of these is below) - see if they can teach you how to do some!

Spelling Activities:

  • Pyramid Writing
  • Three Times
  • Bubble Words
  • Blue Vowels
  • Fancy Letters
