                                                                       Welcome all Starfish and their families.

Throughout the year the children will be developing their skills and knowledge through the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. This is divided into two interconnected areas; the Prime and the Specific. The Prime areas of learning are Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language and Physical Development. The Specific areas of learning are Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and the Expressive Arts and Design.

Observing children’s interests is the basis for planning topic themes as this is how young children learn best, through activities that they can make sense of and be inspired by to be curious investigators. This is balanced with teacher directed  topic introductions, such as  celebrations, traditional tales, people who help us. This widens children’s knowledge of their own immediate world.


                                                               Starfish Term 1 Newsletter 

Hello and welcome to Term 1.  Mrs Gurung, Mrs Davis and I are very excited about sharing your child’s first year at Guston Primary School. If you have any questions or concerns, please do come and speak to one of us.


Water bottles/snacks

Please make sure your child brings a named water bottle to school every day. We will send them home to be washed and refilled each day. At snack time your child will be given the option of having a piece of fruit/ vegetable. If you would like to provide your child with a snack from home this also needs to be fruit or vege.


All children are entitled to free school milk up until the week of their 5th birthday. To receive the milk you need to register your child with Cool Milk. This can be done via the Cool Milk website.

Forest School

During Term 1 the Children will be spending Wednesday morning in the forest area. Please send your child to school in suitable clothing (non-Uniform) A long sleeve top and bottoms would be great due to the amount of nettles in the forest. Also a pair of wellies or alternative shoes for the children to change into would be fantastic, especially  when we are back in the class

 (muddy wellies are not great for the classroom carpet)

Reading books

At the start of Term 1 the children will be choosing a story book from the book corner for you to share at home. They will be given the opportunity to bring a new book home each day.


This year the children will be taking part in a compulsory Baseline assessment within the first 6 weeks of being in school. Further information can be found on both the Class and EYFS page on the school website.


Please can I ask that school uniform is named, this includes book bags or rucksack. Unfortunately, I do not have the smelling skills of a  young child and therefore cannot identify the owner by sniffing.
